IVAW Newsletter: IVAW Congressional Testimony, IVAW member to refuse deployment
May 16, 2008 at 12:57 pm | In Call for Solidarity, Veterans and Active Duty | Leave a CommentThis morning, nine IVAW members testified before Congress for the first time, giving our representatives a picture of the Iraq occupation that has been missing from the debate for too long.
C-SPAN covered the hearing live, and you can watch video of the entire proceedings online or listen to audio from KPFA. Visit the Winter Soldier on the Hill page for links to video and audio files.
IVAW member refuses deployment to Iraq – show your support!
Immediately after this morning’s hearings, IVAW member Sgt. Matthis Chiroux held a press conference where he publicly refused his deployment to Iraq. Sgt. Chiroux had been honorably discharged last summer after four years of service, and had been scheduled to deploy to Iraq in June.
You can read Sgt. Chiroux’s statement on refusing his orders and find links to video of the announcement on our website.
To donate to IVAW’s Legal Fund to support Matthis and other servicemembers who are refusing to support the occupation of Iraq, use our online donation form and select “Legal Fund” under special projects.
If you would like to send a message of support to Sgt Matthis Chiroux, email thankyoumatthis@ivaw.org.

SDS Call to Action: Endorse and Participate in Shutting Down the RNC
March 28, 2008 at 12:30 pm | In Call for Solidarity, Strategy and Praxis, Students | Leave a CommentOver the past year, organizing against the 2008 Republican National Convention (RNC)–which will take place from September 1 through 4 in St. Paul–has grown at a considerable pace. At our 2007 national convention, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) passed a proposal endorsing the work of groups organizing against the RNC and encouraging folks within SDS to organize against both the RNC and the DNC.
Since that time, ACTIVATE (Grand Rapids SDS) has grown increasingly excited about the prospect of achieving a significant victory at the RNC and thereby giving our movement a much needed influx of new energy, tactics, and experiences. Across the country, groups have been talking–and talking seriously–about shutting down the RNC via one of the largest direct action protests in years. The RNC is shaping up to be an event that we won’t want to miss.

Chicago: Catholic Youth Disrupt Easter Services to Protest Cardinal’s War Complicity
March 23, 2008 at 11:26 pm | In Call for Solidarity, News, Students | 14 CommentsDonate to the Bail Fund of the Holy Name 6! Emergency!
CHICAGO, March 23 – Six members of the anti-war group “Catholic Schoolgirls Against The War” staged a dramatic die-in during the 11AM Easter mass at Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago’s most prominent Catholic parish – and the home of one of the nation’s most conservative church leaders, Cardinal George. The protesters also denounced Cardinal George’s January 7 meeting with Mayor Daley and President Bush, who they charged was the “chief architect” of the ongoing carnage in Iraq.
The three men and three women activists timed the action to reach both Holy Name’s large easter audience – including Chicago’s most prominent Catholic citizens, who commonly attend Easter mass at the church — and the many more viewers and readers of the local press, which usually extensively cover the services.

How YOU Can Support this Project NOW
March 5, 2008 at 1:03 am | In About WSH, Call for Solidarity | Leave a CommentI’ve bought an ad in the upcoming issue of Left Turn, an amazing movement magazine of praxis that caters to the very audiance I’m seeking for this blog. In fact, they like this project so much, they’ve given us a generous discount. Since my sugar daddy Richard gave me $20, all I need now is $55 and BAM: slick ad to get the word out, and financial support to a vital movement organ to boot! How easy is that? Just another $10 or $20 each from a few awesome people will do it.

If you can swing it, drop me a line via the contact page, and we’ll work out all the details.
If you’re as broke as I am, you can always spread the word by posting a link on your website, facebook/myspace page, or download a flyer here to print and give to all your friends. OR, even better, write something and contribute to the blog. Original writing is a big goal for this project, so the sooner the better!

SHUTDOWN: The Rise and Fall of Direct Action to Stop the War (DASW)
March 11, 2008 at 2:42 am | In Announcements, Call for Solidarity, In-House Writing, Movement Commentary, News, Strategy and Praxis | 3 CommentsShutdown is an exciting project for anybody who has actively opposed the war, but has felt powerless in the struggle to be effective. Like We Interrupt this Empire, Shutdown is a documentary that focuses on the actions in San Francisco following the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Unlike WITE, however, Shutdown focuses on the strategic dimension of the actions, and the organizational dynamics of Direct Action to Stop the War (DASW) which organized the day of action.
As anyone who knows me can tell you, I was instantly excited when I heard about the project while I perused the workshop schedule of the US Social Forum. Unfortunately I didn’t make it, but I did shoot them an email, to which they gave an appreciative reply, and I’ve been sending them overzealous emails demanding updates ever since. I bookmarked the domain name they set up, and have checked it almost daily for the past few months. Finally, we have some movement there, and I want to let you all know how you can benefit from and support this crucial project. Expect lots of updates about it as things develop.
