The tradition of students un-welcoming the military to UC Santa Cruz and disrupting their attempts to recruit is alive and well, as demonstrated during the “Career” Fair on April 22nd. Students Against War rallied in the Baytree Plaza and marched to the “Career” Fair held in the multipurpose rooms for Colleges 9/10. Campus police, administrators, faculty, other staff and students collected backpacks and identification cards from the students who entered the “Career” Fair. Colorful helium balloons arched over steel barricades at the entrance to the “Career” Fair featured signs that boldly proclaimed “Part-time Jobs!!!” Indeed, the future is very bleak for the generations growing up during Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr. and whoever comes next. Santa Cruz, CA: Students Confront Military Recruiters at Career Fair
April 22, 2008 at 10:25 pm | In Counter-recruitment, Students | Leave a CommentAdmin’s note: Students Against War (SAW) is a fantastic organization with a solid track record. SDS and the rest of the antiwar movement would do well to strive to live up to their example.
Students protest military recruiters at UCSC career fair
By J.M. BROWN – Sentinel Staff Writer
SANTA CRUZ – Performing a spoof on TV award shows, a dozen students opposed to military recruiters disrupted a UC Santa Cruz career fair Tuesday, giving Marine and Army officers certificates for being “the best manipulator of sexuality” and telling “the most lies in advertising.”
The Students Against War demonstration, which followed a rally and march of 100 activists, was tame compared to a 2005 clash that led UCSC to close the event. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made Tuesday. Continue reading Santa Cruz, CA: Students Confront Military Recruiters at Career Fair…

New York
Military recruiters are a familiar site in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a predominately Black and Hispanic immigrant neighborhood where nearly 30 percent of residents live below the poverty line. The area is serviced by two recruiting stations, one on Myrtle Avenue and one in neighboring East New York. Recruiters approach students after school in major shopping thoroughfares like Knickerbocker Avenue, while high schools students receive visits from former students who have joined the military.

Pittsburgh 3/19: Evict the military recruitment station, cage the recruiters!
March 5, 2008 at 12:38 am | In Announcements, Counter-recruitment | Leave a CommentAdmin’s note: POG rocks.
When: Wednesday, March 19
Rally: 6:00pm
March: Departs at 6:30pm for the Military Recruiting Station
Where: Meet at the dinosaur sculpture in front of Carnegie Library (4400 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213)
This March 19 hundreds of cities across the U.S. will hold events to mark the anniversary of the war in Iraq and remember the tragic toll the world has and continues to pay; nearly 4,000 U.S. soldiers killed, 30,000 wounded, at least 100,000 Iraqis killed, four million displaced, and nearly a trillion dollars squandered.
While there will be events in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere, members of Pittsburgh Organizing Group (POG) feel it is important that there be a local event connected to our community’s long-standing, successful efforts to use education and action to oppose the war and undermine the militarism that leads to perpetual war(s).

Times Square Recruitment Station Damaged by Explosive Device
March 6, 2008 at 10:45 pm | In Counter-recruitment, In-House Writing, Movement Commentary, Strategy and Praxis | 8 Comments‘Propaganda of the deed,’ the lazy person’s direct action
By m(A)tt, The War Stops Here
The NYPD is alleging that a small bomb caused minor damage to the military recruiting center in Times Square, New York City this morning. The AP is reporting that police have video footage of a hooded bicyclist riding away from the scene, and that several congressional offices have recieved envelopes with photos and manifestos claiming responsibility.
I will not speculate about whether or not this was an act by actual antiwar activists, police provocateurs, or wingnuts. Some important things to keep in mind, however, include the fact that Times Square is not the kind of place where things such as this can just happen without the authorities having a whole lot more to go on than such a vague description; local police forces, and the NYPD in particular, are notorious for creating pretexts for repression against movements they don’t like. But regardless, this situation raises an important point about tactics and strategy, what is or is not defined as direct action, and what types are going to take us the farthest in a movement that can effectively bring the war to an end.
