On International Workers Day, 25,000 rank and file members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union took the day off–and shut down every US West Coast port to call for an end to the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Press Release

Basra Assault Confirms Presence of British forces a Threat to Political and Trade Union Rights in Iraq

In a series of telephone calls from Basra over the past 48 hours, Iraqi trade union activists appeal for solidarity and describe how the so-called ‘Security Plan’ started midnight 24 March with intense shelling and fire from all kind of weapons.

The attacking forces now besieging Basra stretched all the way to the city from Dhi Qar province. Two armoured divisions are deployed, in addition to thousands of policemen, backed by US and British planning and air cover.

They have cut off electricity supplies, food and water on the city of1.5 million people. Hundreds have been killed or injured in a savage, premeditated and unprovoked attack, now spreading to much of Iraq as the people protest and show solidarity with Basra’s beleaguered people. May 1st: ILWU Dock Workers to Strike Against War

March 3, 2008 at 11:19 pm | In Announcements, Labor | Leave a Comment

Admin’s note: Good old ILWU. Say what you will about business unionism, but the west coast longshore workers have a good recent history of striking around important political issues. Back in ‘99 they threatened to strike in defense of the protesters who were brutalized, arrested and held en masse during the Battle of Seattle. In 2003, they struck in support of the antiwar activists who were violently dispersed at the San Francisco waterfront during the invasion-response actions that shut down that city. And I’m sure they were pretty supportive of the May 1 2006 general strike for immigrant rights. I can only hope this newest initiative will lead somewhere.

The typical position of most of the left-wing parties in the US is that the workers are the ones that will ultimately stop the war; I’ve always been doubtful of this, but with any luck labor will play an important part of the growing movement that this blog exists to document and foster.

Iraqi Union Federation, FWCUI, Stages Electrical Sector Sit-In

February 27, 2008 at 3:22 pm | In International, Labor | Leave a Comment

Earlier in February, workplace sit-ins by the Federation of Workers’ Councils and Union in Iraq (FWCUI) occurred in Basra, Hilla, Musayab, and Kut, following the failure of the Electricity Minister to accede to demands by workers.

After a few hours of sit-ins by thousands of workers on 4 February, Minister Karim Wahid Hasan called FWCUI leaders with a readiness to hear those demands. FWCUI called the sit-ins successful for that result, saying in a statement that it was “a courageous step for all workers of Iraq.”
