8 Wes arrests mark Iraq war anniversary

By Kim Segall

Frustrated with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a handful of Wesleyan students who participated in Our Spring Break devoted their two-week breaks to protesting, dancing, chanting and marching against wars that they feel are unjustified and immoral.

“We were impassioned by the idea of dedicating this entire time of our lives to protesting the war,” said Ashley Casale ’11, who, along with Adam Jacobs ’10, came up with the general idea of Our Spring Break. “We wanted to do as much as we could during the break.”

She estimated that 30 University students went to Washington to protest over the course of the two-week break. These students were joined by over 100 other college and high school students from across the country, and collaborated with anti-war groups, peace activists and Iraq War Veterans Against the War (IVAW) in anti-war protests and non-violent actions.

CHICAGO, March 23 – Six members of the anti-war group “Catholic Schoolgirls Against The War” staged a dramatic die-in during the 11AM Easter mass at Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago’s most prominent Catholic parish – and the home of one of the nation’s most conservative church leaders, Cardinal George. The protesters also denounced Cardinal George’s January 7 meeting with Mayor Daley and President Bush, who they charged was the “chief architect” of the ongoing carnage in Iraq.

The three men and three women activists timed the action to reach both Holy Name’s large easter audience – including Chicago’s most prominent Catholic citizens, who commonly attend Easter mass at the church — and the many more viewers and readers of the local press, which usually extensively cover the services.

Shutdown is an exciting project for anybody who has actively opposed the war, but has felt powerless in the struggle to be effective. Like We Interrupt this Empire, Shutdown is a documentary that focuses on the actions in San Francisco following the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Unlike WITE, however, Shutdown focuses on the strategic dimension of the actions, and the organizational dynamics of Direct Action to Stop the War (DASW) which organized the day of action.

As anyone who knows me can tell you, I was instantly excited when I heard about the project while I perused the workshop schedule of the US Social Forum. Unfortunately I didn’t make it, but I did shoot them an email, to which they gave an appreciative reply, and I’ve been sending them overzealous emails demanding updates ever since. I bookmarked the domain name they set up, and have checked it almost daily for the past few months. Finally, we have some movement there, and I want to let you all know how you can benefit from and support this crucial project. Expect lots of updates about it as things develop.

Bay Area: ANTI-AUTHORITARIAN CALL TO ACTION

March 10, 2008 at 4:24 pm | In Announcements, News | 1 Comment

March 19, 2008 is the fifth anniversary of the U.S. government’s brutal invasion and occupation of Iraq. Five years in which over $2.8 trillion dollars has been spent on a bloated U.S. military. Five years in which hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed by brutal U.S. aggression. Five years in which U.S. capitalists have raked in profits at the expense of the Iraqi people.

On this date, Direct Action to Stop the War – a decentralized, unaffiliated, and anti-authoritarian network of Bay Area activists which organized the shutdown of the San Francisco financial district on March 20, 2003 – is organizing a day of direct action against corporate war profiteers and government agencies in downtown San Francisco.
