The tradition of students un-welcoming the military to UC Santa Cruz and disrupting their attempts to recruit is alive and well, as demonstrated during the “Career” Fair on April 22nd. Students Against War rallied in the Baytree Plaza and marched to the “Career” Fair held in the multipurpose rooms for Colleges 9/10. Campus police, administrators, faculty, other staff and students collected backpacks and identification cards from the students who entered the “Career” Fair. Colorful helium balloons arched over steel barricades at the entrance to the “Career” Fair featured signs that boldly proclaimed “Part-time Jobs!!!” Indeed, the future is very bleak for the generations growing up during Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr. and whoever comes next. Santa Cruz, CA: Students Confront Military Recruiters at Career Fair

April 22, 2008 at 10:25 pm | In Counter-recruitment, Students | Leave a Comment

Admin’s note: Students Against War (SAW) is a fantastic organization with a solid track record. SDS and the rest of the antiwar movement would do well to strive to live up to their example.

Students protest military recruiters at UCSC career fair

By J.M. BROWN – Sentinel Staff Writer

SANTA CRUZ – Performing a spoof on TV award shows, a dozen students opposed to military recruiters disrupted a UC Santa Cruz career fair Tuesday, giving Marine and Army officers certificates for being “the best manipulator of sexuality” and telling “the most lies in advertising.”

The Students Against War demonstration, which followed a rally and march of 100 activists, was tame compared to a 2005 clash that led UCSC to close the event. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made Tuesday. Continue reading Santa Cruz, CA: Students Confront Military Recruiters at Career Fair…

Feedback from Attendees of my Direct Action Workshop

April 21, 2008 at 10:19 pm | In Reportbacks, Students, Training | Leave a Comment

Ok, so this may be a little vain, but I’m awfully proud and happy to have been of help to so many great people who attended the COW student conference on April 12th. Click here to find the feedback stats which show my workshop on direct action, named for this blog, which by far got the best feedback of any workshop at the conference (and it was so much fun!). If reading this makes you want to have me come and do the workshop in your locality, or if you want to do the workshop yourself, please drop me a line via the “Announcement Listserv/Feedback” page, which can be found on the right-hand side bar of this page. We’ll work something out!

COMMENTS:

1.

Yay for participatory time–for a Banner Drop! It was great to be hands-on and learn through an activity that was fun & also useful.

2.

This kid Matt seemed like he could easily take on a two hour workshop. He was full of information and got everyone involved. This was the best workshop I attended.

3.

Stick to schedule a bit more.

4.

Definitely my favorite of the day. Matt was incredibly knowledgeable and he showed us a lot of interesting information and videos. I could tell he could have gone on talking for hours and hours about this stuff, and he kept referencing things and saying “write that down” or “look that up” – which I did, and I’m glad I did. I especially loved that instead of just talking about doing something, we actually did get up as a group and did a banner drop.

5.

Lots of content on the history of direct action and why we need direct action. Could do a better role play and more if there where my time

CT: Youth Antiwar Conference Draws 100+ in Important Step for Movement; My Direct Action Workshop Overview

April 18, 2008 at 12:10 pm | In Ideas, In-House Writing, Reportbacks, Students | 2 Comments

CT Opposes the War, originally formed out of a schism in the antiwar movement on  the question of Palestine and working within the Democratic Party, this year committed to building the student antiwar movement by hiring a full-time organizer to put together a state-wide conference for new youth activists. Held at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT this past Saturday, the conference was a huge success, drawing young people from all sorts of campuses–high schools, community colleges, universities–and from a variety of political experiences. The conference agenda was tailored to the needs expressed by potential attendees, and included basic organizing, nonviolent civil disobedience, social movement history, Iraqi refugee support, and divestment campaigns in three workshop blocks, with most workshops repeating to allow people to go to attend most of the workshops they really wanted to. 8 Wes arrests mark Iraq war anniversary

By Kim Segall
News Editor

Frustrated with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a handful of Wesleyan students who participated in Our Spring Break devoted their two-week breaks to protesting, dancing, chanting and marching against wars that they feel are unjustified and immoral.

“We were impassioned by the idea of dedicating this entire time of our lives to protesting the war,” said Ashley Casale ’11, who, along with Adam Jacobs ’10, came up with the general idea of Our Spring Break. “We wanted to do as much as we could during the break.”

She estimated that 30 University students went to Washington to protest over the course of the two-week break. These students were joined by over 100 other college and high school students from across the country, and collaborated with anti-war groups, peace activists and Iraq War Veterans Against the War (IVAW) in anti-war protests and non-violent actions.

SDS Call to Action: Endorse and Participate in Shutting Down the RNC

March 28, 2008 at 12:30 pm | In Call for Solidarity, Strategy and Praxis, Students | Leave a Comment

Over the past year, organizing against the 2008 Republican National Convention (RNC)–which will take place from September 1 through 4 in St. Paul–has grown at a considerable pace. At our 2007 national convention, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) passed a proposal endorsing the work of groups organizing against the RNC and encouraging folks within SDS to organize against both the RNC and the DNC.

Since that time, ACTIVATE (Grand Rapids SDS) has grown increasingly excited about the prospect of achieving a significant victory at the RNC and thereby giving our movement a much needed influx of new energy, tactics, and experiences. Across the country, groups have been talking–and talking seriously–about shutting down the RNC via one of the largest direct action protests in years. The RNC is shaping up to be an event that we won’t want to miss.
