WATERTOWN — Since New York Marches for Peace — a group marching in protest of the Iraq war and for better treatment of veterans of Iraq — left Ithaca last week, they’ve walked up Route 11 through a series of small Central New York towns and villages, joining up with marchers from Rochester and Utica, getting understanding and a few boos along the way. IVAW Newsletter: IVAW Congressional Testimony, IVAW member to refuse deployment

May 16, 2008 at 12:57 pm | In Call for Solidarity, Veterans and Active Duty | Leave a Comment

This morning, nine IVAW members testified before Congress for the first time, giving our representatives a picture of the Iraq occupation that has been missing from the debate for too long.

C-SPAN covered the hearing live, and you can watch video of the entire proceedings online or listen to audio from KPFA. Visit the Winter Soldier on the Hill page for links to video and audio files.

IVAW member refuses deployment to Iraq – show your support!

Immediately after this morning’s hearings, IVAW member Sgt. Matthis Chiroux held a press conference where he publicly refused his deployment to Iraq. Sgt. Chiroux had been honorably discharged last summer after four years of service, and had been scheduled to deploy to Iraq in June.

You can read Sgt. Chiroux’s statement on refusing his orders and find links to video of the announcement on our website.

To donate to IVAW’s Legal Fund to support Matthis and other servicemembers who are refusing to support the occupation of Iraq, use our online donation form and select “Legal Fund” under special projects.

If you would like to send a message of support to Sgt Matthis Chiroux, email thankyoumatthis@ivaw.org.

25% Jump in membership since Winter Soldier

It’s a busy time at Iraq Veterans Against the War. Winter Soldier is now a month behind us, but the effects of all the hard work of our members and volunteers are still being felt. Before Winter Soldier, we had 800 members. Last week, we reached 1,007, and we’re processing more applications every day. Our organizers are busy contacting new members and sending out membership packets at a rate we’ve never experienced before. We appreciate all the hard work and contributions our volunteers, staff, members, and supporters put into Winter Soldier. We’re reaping the rewards of your efforts, and we have no plans to slow down. The other big acknowledgement goes to everyone who came out to the Walkout this year.  Without you guys putting all that energy and enthusiasm into the event, it couldn’t have been so successful.  Special thanks to the photographers of that historic day whose excellent work appears in this article.   Continue reading Rutgers: Tent State/SDS Organizes Massive Walkout Against the War…

What Is To be Done? Assessing The Antiwar Movement

Published March 14, 2008 in the Inydependent

Remember February 15, 2003?

That day saw the largest coordinated global demonstrations in the history of the world. Ten million people from more than 60 countries sent a clear message to Washington that the world was saying no to a U.S. war against Iraq. The newest manifestation of the antiwar movement seemed finally ahead of the game. But when the Bush Administration ignored us, what were we to do next? This was no easy question, and organizers understandably struggled with direction, tactics and strategy.

Five years on, we have some assessing to do. Despite the dedication of many, our successes have been quite limited. We have been unable to translate popular antiwar sentiment into popular antiwar action. We have been unable to build the kind of grassroots political power strong enough to apply pressure to end the occupation.

Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan Overview

By Jacob Flom, from the Midwest SDS listserv

Winter Soldier (if you’ve been under a rock) was a gathering of Iraq Vets Against the War (IVAW) to discuss the truth of what is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan. There was so much to talk about that I just made a rush stream of consciousness reportback : )

Winter Soldier drew media from all over the world
We were featured on BBC World tv, Al Jazeera, Marine, Army, Navy, Air Force Times, Stars and Stripes military newspaper, Democracy Now, Washington Post, Rueters, AP, Blogs of all political persuasions, and many more. most corporate media ignored it all together, as would be expected.

I have compiled a number of winter soldier videos available on youtube: http://youtube.com/profile_favorites?user=thewaz i recommend everyone take a look at some of the testimony.

To kick-off the week of actions around the country, Stop-Loss Congress carried out a series of intersection occupations and confronted politicians as they prepared to go home, to enforce the stop-loss orders that congress has recieved due to their failure to follow through on their commitment to bring all the troops home.
